"I'm making potato salad"

Those are the words that have managed to raise more than $36,000 dollars via the crowdfunding site Kickstarter.

Zack Danger Brown of Columbus, Ohio, put out an initial request on the site for $10 to make potato salad.

"Basically I'm just making potato salad. I haven't decided what kind yet," Brown wrote on the Kickstarter page.

He quickly hit his $10 goal and has now exceeded it more 3,600 times. Over 3,300 backers have contributed to Brown's modest meal—and the campaign still has 25 days to go.

Brown—whose Kickstarter bio describes him as "the guy who will be making the potato salad"—began creating "stretch goals" after the initial $10 goal was reached, The Daily Mail reported.

First he quadrupled his planned potato salad output at $35, then he added a pizza party at $75, and added a second potato salad recipe at $100.

Then the campaign started getting shared around online, and a few articles about its success started popping up around the web. So Brown added new stretch goals which would include better natural mayonnaise, a live stream of the potato salad as it's being made and, at $3,000, a potato salad party for the whole internet.

"My kitchen is too small!" wrote Brown in an update on the Kickstarter page. "I will rent out a party hall and invite the whole internet to the potato salad party (only $10 and above will be allowed in the kitchen)! The internet loves potato salad! Let's show them that potato salad loves the internet!!"

Brown has also added rewards for donations of certain amounts. For example, the potato salad chef will say your name out loud during the streamed potato salad making for a donation of $1, while a donation of $10 will give you an invitation to hang out with Brown while he makes the potato salad.

Extreme potato salad fans who donate $50 or more will receive a "Potato Salads of the World" recipe book.

In a Q&A with The Daily Mail, Brown said he's looking to "do the most good possible with this opportunity."

Brown said he has no idea how much it will actually cost to make the salad, but that he will need to make enough for at least 1,000 bites (the reward for pledging $3 or more to the campaign).

"It's fun and it's creating a fun community," Brown told the Mail. "Potato salad has brought us together. People are offering to write potato salad themed songs and make potato salad themed iPhone apps."

In a video thanking the internet for its support, Brown said, "This is amazing. When I started this campaign my secret goal was that we could make $60 and in three days we have made 1,000 percent of that - $5,000 dollars."

He also said he's been hard at work "learning how to boil potatoes."

The Mail reported that Kickstarter's guidelines allow users to raise money for anything that isn't illegal. However, under the guidelines, he can't simply make the originally planned $10 potato salad and donate the rest to charity.

"We will not disappoint the Internet," Brown told The Columbus Dispatch. "It's what has allowed us to have this moment, what is sacred to us. We love to connect with people."
